My front lawn is in a clay-type soil where if you water it more than around eight minutes at a time, the balance of the water just runs off to the street; when manually watering it I have to water it for eight minutes per zone, then wait about three or four hours, then water another eight minutes per zone to avoid runoff. (I do it at 2:00 AM and again at 6:00 AM.)

When I turn on Smart Watering it wants to do water each of the zones for five minutes, then when it finishes the last zone, it wraps around to want to do the zones again (so if I have four zones, it will water for five minutes every twenty minutes, and that won’t work.)

Is there any way to force Smart Watering to delay?

Also, what settings would you recommend I alter to adjust for a more arid, high UV environment as in Colorado? Smart Watering wants to water my lawn every three to four days here in the summer, where all the experts will tell you that when the temperature is above 90 degrees lawns here need to be watered daily, otherwise every other day if it’s cooler.

I installed the timer last spring and tried letting Smart Watering do its thing only to have to dump huge amounts of water on my lawn by July when it had started to turn to straw due to drastic under-watering.

MAC is 44:67:55:01:45:AB, FW Version 0031, HW version wt25-0001 and I’ve just turned it back on for the season.

    Thanks in advance…

@Billk we have updated our smart watering algorithm since last year and it is greatly improved. I would suggest setting it up and just letting it run for a little while. If you still feel its watering too much or too little, you can go into smart details of the zones and scroll all the way to the bottom. There is a new feature labeled “watering schedule adjustments”. That is a simple way to adjust your smart settings and we request using that form.

That will be good for how often it waters, but there is still no way to tell it “don’t water this zone more than X minutes at a time and be sure to wait Y hours before watering it again or everything beyond that will run off into the street.”

Once again my front yard is on a slope, and typically needs to be watered for 15-16 minutes per zone, but if you apply more than eight minutes at a time, or apply the second eight minutes less than three hours after the first eight minutes, the latter eight minutes of water will just run off.

There needs a way to be able to tell smart watering that about a zone, and simply telling Smart Watering that the soil is clay and is on a slope doesn’t seem to do it – perhaps I’m just missing it or need to tell it the slope of those zones is more than 5%.

BillK, I’m no expert yet on Bhyve but just a user. I assume you are fully setting up each zone in smart watering options? Inside there you can set soil to clay, and slope to as high as 13+%. Under zones, you choose the Smart Details options to set all those parameters of each zone.

The ability to control a “delay” is a feature I have asked for also. I also have extreme clay here in Houston, but less slope. Even when not using smart watering, I want to be able to setup a “delay” in a program between zones and to be able to select the same zone twice or more so that I can prevent runoff.

I did set up Smart Watering but there are some parameters it’s silly about.

For example, my drip normally runs for 30 minutes manually, but Smart Watering wants to run it for five minutes x 4.
