Tagged: soil moisture
Hello,
How do I determine my soil moisture level? (0-100%)
I saw a combination moisture/pH/light sensor at the box store. It read 0-10. Might I use that?
Hello wjyoung, Just so you know you only need your soil moisture level if you plan on using smart watering. You could purchase devices to calculate your soil moisture, but you could just enter it in off your best guess manually when first enabling smart watering for a zone. Once it is set it will adjust automatically based off your smart details, the weather, and recent watering history. Setting it at a lower moisture level will schedule longer, and more frequent watering cycles. Inputting a higher percentage will do just the opposite.
Sure, I could guess, but what if I’m wrong? The system will automatically adjust based upon my first guess. It will recalculate based upon weather patterns and will water as appropriate. But it will still be based upon my first guess. The calculation of how quickly the soil dries is different than the amount of moisture present to begin with. Garbage in, garbage out.
Perhaps you could provide a qualitative definition of soil moisture. I suppose zero percent is bone dry. What is 100 percent? Is that where one drop more would puddle on the surface?
Vwjyoung, all of your future smart predictions will not be based off your initial water moisture level. It is mostly based off of your location, and can be manually adjusted whenever. So if you want it starting off watering longer/more often then set the percentage at a lower amount. If you want it to not water as much or as often set it to a higher percentage. Your smart watering schedules can be adjusted for each zone under the watering schedule adjustments as well. This will allow smart watering to start off how you would like it, and adjust from there.
If you have any questions on how to set your watering schedule adjustments please let me know.
Thank you!
