Orbit Thermostat Troubleshooting

If you are running into any issues while using your Orbit thermostat, then this article has troubleshooting steps for issues we expect to see, and should be able to help.

If your thermostat wires are not labeled and you have no way to find out which wire is which, then we recommend contacting an HVAC Technician to help find out what each of your wires leads to.

If the screen is blank

  • Check Batteries.

    • If batteries are good, then the device may need to be replaced. Please click here to get in contact with our Customer Care Team

No heating/cooling system activation.

  • Make sure wires were properly inserted into the wiring terminal.

    • The copper of separate wires should not be touching.

    • The plastic wire should not extend into the terminal.

  • Check to see if the screen is on & set temperature is visible

    • If the set temperature is not visible but the screen is on, check heat/cool mode switch is in proper heat or cool position.

  • Check if the snowflake or flame icon is solid.

    • If the flame icon is not solid, check set temp is greater than the current temp

    • If the snowflake icon is not solid, check set temp is lower than current temp

  • Check the circuit breaker to the HVAC system and reset if necessary.

  • Make sure the power switch at heating and cooling system is on

  • Make sure the furnace door is closed securely

Fan runs continuously or not at all.

  • If running continuously, let the thermostat sit for 30 min. to allow the temperature to stabilize.

  • If the fan icon is on with no fan, or if the icon is off but the fan is running.

    • Verify that the G wire in the thermostat is connected properly

    • Verify copper wires are not exposed & touching other wires

    • Verify heating/cooling power switch is on.

    • Verify the circuit breaker isn’t tripped.

    • Verify furnace door is closed securely

Incorrect Room Temperature.

  • Let the thermostat sit for 30 minutes to allow the temperature to stabilize

  • Check the placement of thermostat, make sure it’s not in an unusually drafty or heated area

  • Verify the wall hole for the wires is insulated properly.

  • Check temperature offset. *see instructions

Not reaching set temperature

  • Verify the mode switch is in proper heat or cool mode.

  • Verify heating/cooling systems are working properly.

    • See no heating/cooling system activation in the troubleshooting section above.

Wrong temperature scale displayed.

  • Press & hold the reset button while pressing the up arrow to toggle between Fahrenheit t & Celsius.

System turns on too frequently (non-programmable)

  • Adjust cycle period to the desired number of minutes. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.

  • While holding down the reset button, press down the arrow (non-programmable) until the offset indicator appears. Release reset button.

  • Immediately press the reset button again. (Offset setting will not be lost).

  • Use up & down arrows to toggle between 6, 12, 20, and 60. 12, 20 & 60 used for heat pumps

  • Press the reset button again to select desired cycle period. Replace thermostat to wall mount.

  • Slide mode switch to heat or cool & wait 10 seconds.

System turns on too frequently (programmable)

  • Adjust cycle period to the desired number of minutes. Remove the thermostat from the wall plate.

  • While holding down the reset button, press down the set button until the offset indicator appears. Release reset button.

  • Immediately press the set button twice. (Offset setting will not be lost).

  • Use up & down arrows to toggle between 0, 12, 15, 20, 30 and 60 for heat pumps – 0, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, and 60 for furnace.

  • Press the set button again to select desired cycle period. Replace thermostat to wall mount.

  • Slide mode switch to heat or cool & wait 10 seconds.

Set temperature is 10° above original set temp in cooling mode, or 10° below original set temp in heating mode

  • Check if low battery indicator is on

  • Replace batteries

Heat pump issues cool air in heat mode, or warm air in cool mode

  • Check that thermostat is set for heat pumps

    • Put the thermostat in Off mode

    • While holding down the reset button, press the down arrow button until the offset indicator appears and release reset. Press the reset button again. (non-programmable)

    • While holding down the reset button, press the set key until the offset indicator appears. Press the set button twice. (programmable)

    • The unit should say HP (if it says F, press an arrow key to toggle to HP)

    • Switch mode to heat or cool.

  • Switch jumper on the back of thermostat near fan switch to the other two pins

  • Check the wiring between heat and cool are in their proper terminals
